There are 5 different skin types used to describe the majority of people's skin: dry, normal, oily, combination and sensitive. These skin type labels are recognized by the AAD (American Academy of Dermatology) and used to describe skin as it relates to the production of sebum (oil) used to lock in moisture in/on the skin.
Not exactly sure which type you have? You can learn by completing these 4 Easy Steps to Figure Out Your Skin Type here.
People who have dry skin type often describe their skin as feeling tight/dry after bathing, cleansing or swimming. Dry skin often itches, cracks or flakes and may look dull, rough or ashy. If you have dry skin, it means your skin produces less sebum than it needs.
When someone is described as having normal skin type, it means that their skin is not oily, dry or sensitive. Someone with normal skin typically has an even complexion and very few blemishes, if any. Their skin produces enough sebum to evenly hydrate the skin without becoming greasy.
Oily skin type can often be described as feeling greasy or looking shiny (most commonly around the nose and forehead). This skin type is prone to an overproduction of sebum, has larger pores that clog easily and is prone to blemishes and/or blackheads.
People who have combination skin type will have areas that are oily as well as other areas that are dry. Most commonly, the oily spots are in the T-zone (the forehead, nose and chin) while the cheeks and other areas may feel dry or even normal.
Sensitive skin type is skin that becomes inflamed or irritated easily, such as bumps, hives, peeling, burning, stinging or itching after products are applied. This is the only skin type that is not associated with the amount of sebum it produces, therefore people with dry or oily skin may also have sensitive skin. Typical causes of sensitive skin are dryness or skin conditions (i.e. rosacea or eczema).
Rest assured, no matter which skin type you have there are ingredients and products to help you achieve your healthiest skin. The key is knowing where to start and once you know and understand your skin type, taking care of it is that much easier.
